Arson ~ Reduce the Risk

Arson is more than an ugly, tragic thing.  It is a crime, often punishable by
imprisonment.   Arson fires usually occur in isolated, rural locations, where
property is left unattended for extended periods of time.  Unsecured doors
or windows make entry easy for the arsonist.  Arsonists and other intruders
often use overgrown shrubs or darkness to get close to their target.  We'll
never be able to completely stop arson offenders, but arson prevention is
easier than you think!  Here are a few things you and your family can do to
reduce the risk.

CHECK YOUR PROPERTY DAILY
Take nothing for granted at home or

at work.  Keep your eyes open for anything that looks out of place, may
have been broken into, or for suspicious objects.

IMMEDIATELY REPORT ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS
If you see what you
think may be suspicious persons, vehicles, or other activities nearby,
report them to authorities immediately.

MAKE MENTAL NOTES OF WHAT YOU SEE

Remember as many
specific things as possible about any suspicious persons you see.  A good
physical description may help police or fire officials to identify them.

ALTER YOUR ROUTINE

Don't be afraid to alter your activities at home

and at work, from time to time.  Doing things at different times and on
different days precludes an arson from knowing your schedule and
thinking he can count on it for his own protection and success.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE NEIGHBORS' HOUSE ~  Don't be afraid to watch
out for your neighbor once in a while, especially if the things you see
appear a little unusual.  They'll thank you for reporting an arsonist or thief
next door.  A little sense of community never hurt anyone.

KEEP IN TOUCH WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT AND FIRE OFFICIALS IN
YOUR AREA ~
Get to know the firefighters and policemen in your
neighborhood.  Keep the numbers for reporting incidents near your phone
in plain view.  Some day you'll be happy you did.

REQUEST AN ARSON RISK ASSESSMENT ~  Call your local fire marshal
or police to schedule one.  They can make specific recommendations to
reduce your risk of arson.
